Do you like to look at art?
Do you like to talk about art?
Do you like to do crafts with children?

If you answered “yes” to any, you would make a great volunteer for GRACE Art.

GRACE (Greater Reston Art Center) is a non-profit visual arts center located in Reston Town Center in Reston, Virginia. GRACE established “Art in the Schools” (AIS) to enrich the art program offered by our schools. The program is based on in-class presentation of art historical subjects, followed by coordinated art projects.

GRACE Art-in-the-Schools has portfolios on artists and art subjects that Oakton Elementary borrows six times a year. GRACE Art coordinators at Oakton Elementary provide training in September for all new parent volunteers, referred to as “docents”. The first portfolio is presented to the docents at this meeting.

** The artists, supplies, and projects are organized for you, so there is no need to be an expert in art. **

For the remaining 5 portfolios, you can attend evening meetings where the GRACE Art coordinators will introduce each artist, portfolio and sample projects to help you prepare to present to your child’s class.

You and the other GRACE Art volunteers for your classroom will coordinate in advance with your child’s teacher to come up with a monthly date and time for GRACE Art for a total of 6 times a year. Each classroom session requires some preparation ahead of time and usually lasts 1 hour, including a 15-20 minute open discussion and questions about the artist or subject, followed by a 45 minute art activity to enhance what the children learned. Coordinating and advance scheduling can all be done via email and online.

Please consider being a GRACE Art volunteer in your child or children’s classroom. Elementary school is a special time for children and families. Becoming involved in GRACE Art allows you to:

• Get to know the school and other parents.
• Get to know other students in your child’s class.
• Be involved in and experience your child’s class up to 6 times per year.
• Demonstrate to your child the importance you place on school and expanding your horizons.

GRACE Art is funded by the Oakton Elementary School PTA. The program is coordinated by Julie Drake, Erin Martin, Marcia Visaggio, and Susan Yano.

Each classroom requires two or more docents for the program to succeed. More volunteers are always welcome and lightens the load!
